New Zealand has an open economy that places few barriers in the way of foreign services providers or importers. To overcome barriers with exporting overseas, New Zealand pursues an active Free Trade Agreement (FTA) agenda.

These agreements aim to minimize if not take away barriers to imported goods from New Zealand and make New Zealand a preferred trading partner in these countries.

New Zealand believes in negotiating high quality and comprehensive agreements covering a range of trade-related issues. The following agreements are in place:

  • Free Trade Agreements: Malaysia, China, Australia
  • Free Trade Agreements under negotiation: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, India, Korea
  • Closer Economic Partnership Agreements: Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Singapore, Australia
